The Breakdown

• A pilot project is a small-scale preliminary project, and in terms of food safety, is focused on developing new technologies for safer food.

Our Position

• Stop Foodborne Illness recognizes the need for the federal government to encourage more pilot projects and generally supports pilot projects as a whole.

• However, Stop does not support individual pilot projects as they are tests of new systems and approaches that must first be validated.

• A product from a pilot project should never be put on the market with the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) seal unless it has been re-inspected under traditional inspection methods.
