Protecting consumers by building strong food safety cultures
The Alliance to Stop Foodborne Illness is a program of Stop Foodborne Illness. It unites consumer advocates, leading companies, and like-minded organizations around a shared mission: preventing foodborne disease. With more than 20 members, the Alliance fosters collaboration to share best practices and strengthen food safety culture across the global food system.
We elevate powerful personal stories that illustrate the real impact of foodborne illness, inspiring individuals at every level of the industry to make safe food a daily priority. Recognizing that lasting progress requires partnership, the Alliance champions cooperative, system-wide approaches to food safety and the development of strong, mature food safety cultures.
By providing a collaborative framework for action, the Alliance helps shift the food system from isolated efforts to aligned, collective impact—driven by a shared commitment to prevention, continuous improvement, and positive food safety leadership.
The Alliance is home to the Food Safety Culture Toolkit, an award-winning, multimedia resource designed to advance food safety culture at small and medium-sized companies.
Since launching in June 2022, over 1600 users have registered for the Toolkit. The heat map below highlights the concentration of registrants from across the globe.
The Alliance is proud to partner with Cultivate SA, a Swiss-based global consultancy firm founded by Dr. Lone Jespersen.
Dr. Jespersen’s 2026 book, A Decade of Cultivating Food Safety shares practical, real-world insights from global leaders working to strengthen food safety culture across the supply chain. Featuring a foreword by Stop Foodborne Illness CEO Sandra Eskin, the book offers actionable strategies for organizations committed to continuous improvement. All proceeds go to Stop Foodborne Illness.
